The ospreys returned
To their nest in the high snag
 And lacustrine sweep

A red-winged black bird
Displays its blazing shoulders
Against night’s body

Truth drops in the pond
Creating seamless circles
That never find shore

A dark-eyed junco
Fluttered down from the peach tree
Pecking for new seeds

Flurry in the pool
A robin dipping its head
Flapping with freshness

There is a flyway
Across our yard – between trees
Where the fast crow flies

The land of big trucks
Miasma, noise, and fat tires
Hubris on display

Oh Ponderosa!
Cast a coating of ochre
Raise candles skyward
